Debate Team

Our first tournament:

The middle school debate team attended a tournament at Marlborough School for Girls on January 15. It was a lot of fun and a fantastic learning experience. For many of the girls, this was the first tournament, but despite lots of nerves, our teams won some of their rounds and received many compliments from the judges. We were all proud of Molly, who won a speaking award.

The parents who attended learned a lot about how debating is judged. There are two aspects to the judging of debate. Teams are judged strictly on content, and whether a team wins or loses the debate depends only on if the debaters sucessfully defend their position and counter their opponent's position. Points are awarded to individuals for speaking ability, but the individual's points do not affect the outcome of the debate. Students can win awards for having high speaker points, and teams win awards for winning debates. Participation in this activity builds our girls' confidence and their critical thinking skills, so we're very pleased to have them involved.
