Kindergarten and first graders took a trip to Fire Station No 7 in Long Beach, and it was fantastic! When we first arrived, we gathered on the grass in front of the fire station and Captain Keith Farrell gave us a warm welcome. Our tour began upstairs in the captain’s quarters. From there we walked through the locker rooms (cleaned daily), and then moved on to the weight room where cubicles separated the beds where the firemen spend the night. A firefighter slid down the pole and the captain demonstrated the proper technique. Downstairs we watched a small portion of a training video and Samantha lounged in the lazy boy chair. We had a picnic lunch on the grass as the fireman continued to educate and quiz us. They were called out while we were eating and it was amazing to watch them jump into their gear and pull out of the station so quickly. Perfect timing for us but a false alarm for them…within a few minutes they were pulling back into the station. We got hands on training from the firefighters on what to do if trapped in a fire. A fireman crawled on the ground wearing all of his protective gear and the girls practiced yelling “I’m In Here!” We took turns trying on the heavy jacket with special tools and holding the water hose. Jasmine accidentally got sprayed by water but was a good sport about it. Firemen lifted the girls onto the truck for an inside view and our last stop, frequently requested by the girls, was the kitchen. Captain Keith Farrell gave an excellent tour and the entire team created an educational and fun trip for all of us. What an awesome experience!
