Riley's Farm

Kindergarten, first, and second graders had a great day at Riley’s Farm. They sang on the bus and chatted excitedly.  Once we arrived our first project was to make candles.  Girls took turns dipping a wick into tallow and watched their candles grow.  Our next stop, the hayride.   Two beautiful horses pulled us around the farm passing a variety of trees and a log cabin as a dog ran alongside.  Our tour guide was a twelve year-old boy who grew up on the farm.  He talked about the area and played a tune on a jew’s-harp.  Did you know that there are 150 different kinds of apples in Oak Glen? We stopped beside a tent and covered wagon then learned about traveling in the old days.  After taking a short break from all the fun we were having, we ate caramel apples… yum!  For a few in our group this was their first caramel apple and Anna lost a tooth in hers.  Before lunch the girls took turns picking apples to be pressed into cider as Ms. Stephanie cranked the wheel.  On the ride back home, some watched Little House on the Prairie while others slept.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather, and it was an informative, fun-filled day.
