Why an all girls' school?

Mary Pipher, renowned author of Reviving Ophelia, has written this about girls' schools: "When I wrote Reviving Ophelia, I had never been in a girls' school. Since Reviving Ophelia came out in 1994, I've spoken at many fine girls' schools. I wish my daughter could have attended one."

What are some of the benefits of an all-girl school?

• Without boys, girls are focused on their performance rather than appearance.
• Girls become active participants in class and aren’t afraid to excel in class.
• Faculty are focused on the welfare of girls 100% of the time.
• Programs are sensitive to the developmental, social, intellectual and emotional needs of girls.
• Girls are encouraged to take calculated risks in the classroom.
• Girls are more apt to elect and succeed in higher-level math and science courses and do well in them.
• Strong female role models in the faculty, in the curriculum and in guest speakers help girls develop high expectations for themselves.
• There are more opportunities to develop leadership and public speaking skills.
• Participation in sports is expected and is supported.

Same-sex or coed?

As a parent, you want the best education for your daughter, and a big part of that depends on who's sitting next to her in class. Co-ed schools claim to mirror the "real world." However, that could not be farther from the truth.

Educators agree that scientific research by The American Association of University Women and by the National Coalition of Girls' Schools disproves this claim. In reality, girls from single-gender schools excel in the "real world." In fact, a large percentage of female leaders in industry, business and politics have graduated from all-girls’ schools. .

Instead of reflecting the real world, all-girls' schools prepare girls to succeed in it. They are challenged and nurtured. They build confidence and a sense of self. They learn from strong female role models. And, they gain critical academic, social and leadership skills. In an educational setting that is geared to the way that girls learn, they develop strong self-confidence that enables them to excel in the real world and better weather the elements of life. At Laurelcrest, our climate, our curriculum, our faculty are all ideally suited to the development of girls for success in life.
